The Overdeck Family Foundation (the “Foundation”) is seeking a full-time Program Officer to lead the Foundation’s Inspired Minds portfolio, which focuses on inspiring young minds through out-of-school STEM.  Current investment strategies include (a) increase access to out-of-school STEM; (b) increase the quality of out-of-school-STEM; (c) build positive perception of STEM In students and families, including through family math; and (d) support potential future innovators in building STEM and 21st century skills. 

In this role, you will manage the Inspired Minds portfolio toward impact, influence, and learning, aligned with Foundation’s measures of success. You will maintain an understanding of the landscape and the broader philanthropic sector and develop and drive goals, strategy decisions, and grantmaking aligned to a logic model. In addition, you will also be influencing the broader STEM community, focused specifically on out of school STEM and Family Math. You will manage the Inspired Minds Program Analyst to analyze data and research from grants and the broader education field.


Officer will lead the Foundation’s Inspired Minds portfolio, which focuses on inspiring young minds through out-of-school STEM.  Current investment strategies include (a) increase access to out-of-school STEM; (b) increase the quality of out-of-school-STEM; (c) build positive perception of STEM In students and families, including through family math; and (d) support potential future innovators in building STEM and 21st century skills.

You will take on the following responsibilities:

  • Define the portfolio strategy with a clear logic model, establish clear and measurable goals, design testable assertions that improve and hasten organizational learning cycles, and manage team members toward stated outcomes
    • Map out current needs, gaps, and opportunities in the portfolio landscape
    • Outline 3-5 year strategy with associated goals and benchmarks based on best practices, evidence, and research base 
    • Build strategy by setting priorities, aligning actions and resources, considering short-term and long-term tradeoffs and pressures 
    • Use data and evidence to design investment hypotheses; justify investments and their alignment to goals, portfolio logic model 
    • Collect, analyze and use quantitative and qualitative data from grantees and research to drive strategic revisions and improvements based on learning toward increasing impact, influence, and learning
    • Build deep engagement and understanding from trustees on goals, strategy, and aligned grantmaking 
  • Source, identify, recommend, monitor, renew, and close grants aligned to portfolio goals and logic model
    • Build investment portfolio that maximizes impact through field innovation, scale / cost, influence and learning
    • Engage with current and prospective Foundation grantees to conduct rigorous and comprehensive diligence that includes conducting competitive and cost benefit analyses, financial review, and determining unique proposition
    • Understand, develop, and manage different types of grants toward the Foundation’s goals of impact, influence, and learning
    • Support organizations beyond financial capital with guidance around governance, theory of change and impact, organizational priorities, research and development, communications and storytelling, policy / advocacy, and financial sustainability
    • Monitor and evaluate toward stated goals, adjusting support accordingly 
    • Communicate complex work of portfolio and grantees to trustees in clear, understandable, and relatable presentations
  • Serve as a thought leader in the field and increase influence for the portfolio and grantee organizations toward increased impact for students 
    • See systems, inspire a shared vision, and facilitate agreement with other funders to design comprehensive change strategies
    • Collaborate and influence the sector to ensure grant-making alignment and increase the impact of success of Inspired Minds grantees, based on community input and authentic demand
    • Organize and coordinate meetings for grantees and key field experts 
    • Represent the Foundation externally at appropriate meetings, funder groups, conferences, public presentations, and site visits 
You should possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience, with relevant experience and sector leadership in out of school or STEM education
  • BA/BS degree plus MA/MS degree in education, policy, business, law, statistics, math, science, engineering, or another related field
  • Experience in public speaking and writing for publications
  • Demonstrated management experience, focused on development and growth of staff
  • Demonstrated success working effectively on strategic partnerships with organizations, foundations, and policy leaders, including refining messaging, establishing credibility, and building influence 
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse stakeholders toward shared outcomes
  • Demonstrated experience formulating and executing strategy, identifying challenges, and implementing solutions 
  • Commitment to delivering high quality work products and achieving results through an analytical and learning orientation 
  • Initiative with a results-driven orientation; ability to use data to make decisions and communicate impact for growth 
  • Team orientation with ability to see and consider multiple viewpoints and perspectives
