Data Clinic is a unique business unit within Two Sigma that enables employees to volunteer their time, data science skills, and technological know-how to support nonprofits in their effort to use data more effectively. To address our partners’ particular challenges, we share our expertise, teach our way of thinking, and source the right talent from among employees.  We believe rigorous data analysis and engineering can help nonprofits in many ways and we hope our work enables them to focus on what they do best – strengthening the communities they serve.

As a Data Clinic data journalist intern, you would work closely with the team to enhance our external visibility through effective communication, visualization, and data storytelling. Specific deliverables might include project articles highlighting the partnership and its impact, original thought pieces related to open data and social impact, client presentations, and data visualizations to complement written content. The internship would provide an opportunity to apply data journalism and visualization techniques to real world problems to maximize impact. In addition, Data Clinic interns would have the opportunity to explore new skills and learn from other Two Sigma employees in informal mentorship settings.

You will take on the following responsibilities:

  • Translate data science and engineering projects into blog-style narratives (including a summary of the problem/challenge tackled, partnership details, project scope, results, and impact)

  • Lead development of our data visualization technical style guide 

  • Create data visualizations for client presentations, blogs, papers, and other content

  • Assist with social media strategy and external communication to stakeholders

  • Pursue independent data journalism on social impact work and/or open data 

You should possess the following qualifications:

  • Are pursuing or have a degree in a) journalism with a focus on data or b) a quantitative discipline with a strong focus on data storytelling and communication (e.g., data visualization, graphics and design) 

  • A demonstrated passion for using data to solve hard, impactful problems and a desire to leverage data on behalf of non-profit organizations

  • Ability to communicate technical topics to a broad audience of non-experts

  • Experience creating data visualizations

  • Some experience applying data analysis to real world problems (ideally using open source software/languages such as Python or R)

  • Previous experience volunteering or doing pro-bono work

Important Note: You must be able to travel to our NYC office and commit to 10 – 20 hours per week for the full semester in the spring. We will also consider summer start dates.
